On Friday 24th October, the history department took a group of Year 7 pupils to visit the very significant Roman sites at Caerwent and Caerleon. There were a few rain showers, but they didn’t dampen the excitement of the pupils who enthusiastically explored the archaeological remains of shops, houses, the forum basilica, temple and city walls at Caerwent.
We also looked at some Roman artefacts in the church porch before we enjoyed our lunch. At Caerleon we toured the remains of Roman barracks, the amphitheatre and the baths before visiting the Roman Legionary Museum. In the museum, pupils were intrigued by the artefacts from Roman burials and some of them tried on Roman armour.
The aim of the day was to investigate how the Roman Conquest changed Wales and we did this and had fun doing so.
