Fitzalan commemorates VE Day 80

The strains of Glenn Miller echoing through the corridors began our day commemorating the historic 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.  We held an online assembly when we considered the impact of the war, the celebrations on 8th May 1945 and most importantly the sacrifice made by so many for the freedom we enjoy today.

In the afternoon we held a ‘street party’ with 30 invited pupils (chosen by their history teachers).  The event started with a presentation including photographs, film clips and an overview of the Second World War.  It was an opportunity to reflect on why VE Day was such an important historical event.  After the presentation, we headed outside for sandwiches, biscuits and scones with jam and cream.  There was 1940s music and plenty of bunting.  Staff dressed up in wartime costumes.  To add to the fun we had games of ‘pass the parcel’ and ‘pin the tail on the donkey’.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the commemorations fun, poignant and a day to remember.
