Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) - Bronze - Gold!

Its been a busy and a highly successful end of the summer term for the D of E team. We had multiple teams completing the award at all levels (Bronze- Gold)  across south Wales In the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains, and the Gower.

15 pupils from the Sixth form complete their gold D of E in some challenging conditions around the Pen Y Fan and Black mountains ranges. Starting at Hay Bluff traversing the full Black mountain range, completing the Dragon's Back and finishing on Blean y glyn after summiting Carn Pica after finding the hidden Wellington Bomber plane wreck on the Pen Y Fan Range. The teams were out for 4 days completely self-sufficient and summited multiple mountains and walked over 70km during the expedition. It's been highly successful as all pupils have completed the award Bronze- Gold at Fitzalan High School.  A massive congratulations to everyone as this is a huge achievement showing your commitment over the last 3 years.

2 teams from year 11 complete their silver expeditions based in Abergavenny and Black mountains range. The pupils had 3 big days out in the mountains surrounding Abergavenny and climbed multiple summits including Sugar Loaf in some very hot conditions and finishing in White Castle. A great effort from all of you!

4 teams from year 10 completed their Bronze D of E award in South Gower. This is the first time completing an independent expedition over 2 days from Port Eynion to Penmaen. The groups walked in 4 seasons of weather from 50 mph gust and horizontal rain to bright sunshine traversing along the Welsh Coast path to Worms Head and moving their way inland across the moors.  A great effort by everyone and we look forward to seeing you all move on to the Silver Award.

The D of E Team would like to say a massive thank you to Carol Taylor for all her help assessing and supervising the award over the last 10 years at Fitzalan. Carol you have been amazing and will be greatly missed, but we hope you enjoy your retirement!

A big thank you to, Mr Waggett, Mr Van Der Veen, Miss Renyolds, Mrs Barrow, Miss Veitch, Mr Williams and Mr Collins for their time and expertise allowing all the pupils to complete the award.
