Announcement

Lawrenny Avenue Road Closure

CARDIFF COUNCIL

Covid 19 School Streets Project

Fitzalan High School

Date: June 2020

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Roads around school gates are often dominated by cars during school drop off and pick up times.  As pupils and staff return to school it is important that the area with in the immediate vicinity of schools is safe and accessible for everyone.  Cardiff Council is implementing temporary measures outside some schools to assist safe, social distancing for pupils and staff arriving and leaving school.   A section of Lawrenny Avenue will be part of a temporary road closure to support social distancing within the immediate vicinity of the school. The extent of the temporary road closure can be viewed on the attached plan.  The temporary road closure will be in place for four weeks from Monday 29th June 2020.

How it will Work

Motor vehicles will not be permitted to drive in the street during prescribed hours. The temporary road closure will operate on Monday and Friday between the hours of 8am - 10am and 2:30pm – 4pm.  The temporary road closure will be delineated with traffic cones and staffed by Cardiff Council.  Blue Badge Holders will be able to access the street at all times.

By reducing the number of vehicles around school entrances during these times we hope to make the streets safer for pupils, staff and parents/guardians as they return to school.

Active Travel

To support the school and the local community, parents and carers should travel with their children to and from school, ideally on foot, or by bike, scooter or any other means of active travel. Social distancing should be maintained on the journey to and from school.  Closing the street directly outside the school will not only help to make the street safer, but will help air quality around the school site, increase physical activity levels and reduce the number of cars driving to the school site.

How can I get involved?

If you are interested in helping your school increase active travel for the school journey you can get in touch with the head teacher. There are many ways that you can get involved or volunteer, and we look forward to hearing from you.

We would like to thank you in advance for your patience regarding this matter and for helping us make the school run safer for everyone involved.

Yours faithfully,
