Y13 Film Studies: London's BFI

On Monday 07th March 2022, Miss Millard took three of the Year 13 Film Studies pupils to London for an exciting learning experience at the BFI (British Film Institute).

An incredibly early start, we made our way from Cardiff at 04.20am to London Victoria. Upon arrival we walked to a nearby café and refuelled with pastries and hot drinks (a much-needed sugar boost!), before taking a walking tour to the BFI. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, although cold, it was a clear day - perfect for taking in the sights and sounds of London's busy centre.

We walked past Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, and the London Eye (stopped for lots of tourist pictures!).

We then started our day at the BFI, lead by Matthew Daintry-Hall, who flew in from Nigeria for the conference, looking at:

  • Silent film and Aesthetic/ Cultural Movements
  • Silent film auteur: Buster Keaton

We ended the day with a screening of 'The General' (1926) with piano accompaniment from John Sweeney. We were incredibly impressed that he did the accompaniment for the entire film without sheet music!

It was such an excellent learning opportunity for our pupils and a thoroughly enjoyable (if a little long..!) day!
