A tough draw for our Year 9 hockey team

The year 9 hockey team were back in action last night. On the coldest day of the year so far we travelled the short distance to St Cyres. The cold didn't put the girls off as we had 13 players with two new players (Kelsey Morgan and Shahad Ussuman).

Fitzalan started strongly making their way forward up the pitch through centre midfielders Ahlam Mokhtar and Thuraya Mahyoub (year 8). Thuraya had an early opportunity in the attacking circle; however, the St Cyres goal keeper made a good save to clear the ball. Captain Hanaa Mohamed continued to dominate from the back pushing the team forward to put the opposition under pressure.

Fitzalan had most of the possession for the opening ten minutes and continued to attack. However, St Cyres made one counter attack, Fitzalan were not clinical in their defence and left their feet exposed; resulting in St Cyres winning a penalty corner. The defence held strong and cleared the ball out wide to Sumayah Tahir. Fitzalan began to tire in the last five minutes of the half which was evident as our passing was not as accurate and we allowed St Cyres to have possession.

The second half saw St Cyres start the half how they had finished the first half, capitalising on Fitzalan's errors. Fitzalan remained strong in defence, with goalkeeper Zaynab Mahyoub guiding the defence in their marking. In the final five minutes of the half, Fitzalan were determined to try to get the winner. They attacked forward in numbers and really tested the St Cyres keeper with all shots on target.

Unfortunately we couldn't get the winner; however, we were happy to draw the game 0-0 in a close game.

Captain Hanaa Mohamed was voted as player of the match.
