Eco-Club trip to Lavernock Beach

On Monday 6th December 2021 Miss. M. Dykes-Swindell (Eco-Schools coordinator), Mr. S. Draper and Mr. E. Hall took a group of eco-club pupils in Years 8, 9 and 10 to Lavernock beach in the Vale of Glamorgan to carry out a litter pick.

The eco-club have implemented a litter strategy around the school, which takes place at lunchtimes.  The strategy has led to a reduction in the volume of litter found around the school site.  The eco-warriors wanted to carry out litter picking outside of the school grounds and were particularly keen on visiting a beach to reduce the amount of waste such as plastic entering the oceans, which could turn into microplastics and enter the food chain.

The pupils collected a range of waste to include plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminium cans and more.  The pupils were shocked at the amount of fishing lines and equipment that has been disposed of, which has either been left by people fishing or has been washed up onto the beach.

The pupils discussed the dangers that fishing lines and hooks would have upon the wildlife to include sea birds, fish, and other marine organisms.
