A prominent quartet of Glamorgan players from a South Asian background have been encouraged by a trip around the Welsh Assembly. Mujahid Ilyas is a leg-spinner who has also been playing for Wales Minor Counties. Last season he took three wickets in a friendly for Glamorgan against Yorkshire. Umar Malik is an opening batsman who had made centuries for Wales MC against Shropshire and Devon. Osama Subhan is a right-arm seamer who was leading wicket-taker last season for Cardiff in the Premier League in 2019. The trio all attended Fitzalan High School, Cardiff. Joining them was their coach, Kevin Lyons, from Cardiff CC, who used to coach Rory Burns, Jack Leach and new Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie at Cardiff MCCU in 2010. There is a rich seam of talent from the South Asian community in Wales, and Glamorgan look to be tapping into it effectively now.
